Animal licenses are required for any person who shall own, keep, harbor or have custody of any dog or cat over (6) months of age within the City of Peculiar.  You may obtain a license for your pet at the Peculiar Police Department, 224 N. Main Street, by providing proof that the animal has been currently vaccinated for rabies by a licensed veterinarian.  The license tag must be secured on the collar or harness.  The license period shall begin on January 1st and end on December 31st each year.

There may be a late fee for any license purchased after January 31st **

Exceptions to late fee:
  • Proof of new residency (60 days or less) within the city
  • Proof the animal was under (6) months old on January 31st
  • Proof the animal was newly acquired (within 10 days)

The written application for license shall state the name, address and telephone number of the owner.  It shall also include the name, breed, color, sex and distinguishing marks of the animal.  Proof of current vaccination for rabies and, if applicable, proof of sterilization by a licensed veterinarian. 

 Licensing Fees include:

  • Sterilized Animal                    $5.00
  • Unsterilized Animal              $10.00
  • Late fee after January 31st    $5.00
  • Lost tag or transfer tag fee     $1.00


Animals that are Impounded


Impounded Animals will be housed at the Harrisonville Animal Shelter for a period of no less than (5) days. Prior to the pickup of an impounded animal the owner shall pay the applicable pick up fees, boarding fees, and after hours call out charges as follows:

  • Pick Up Fees Per 12 month Period:
        1st Offense     $50.00              2nd Offense    $75.00              3rd Offense    $100.00 to $500.00
  • Boarding Fees    $20.00 per night
  • After Hours Call Out Fee:    $50.00

As well as any other fees associated with the animal including, but not limited to, a handling fee of no less than $20.00, a disposal fee of no less than $40.00 and any medical fees that may be incurred.

All pick up, boarding, after hour call out fees, etc., must be paid at the Peculiar Police Department before the animal will be released to the owner.  However, any animal housed at the Harrisonville Animal Shelter that has not been previously microchipped will be required per City of Harrisonville ordinance to pay a $25.00 fee directly to the Harrisonville Animal Shelter for microchip services.

Any animal not claimed by the owner after an appropriate holding period my be disposed of in one of the following ways:
  • Euthanasia: Using a method approved by the American Veterinarian Medical Association.
  • Release for adoption to a humane organization.
  • Release for adoption to a person who shows evidence of ability and intention to provide the animal with an appropriate home and humane care.

** Officers can only pick up dogs and cats **

Calls involving the removal of wild animals such as raccoons, opossums, and snakes cannot be handled by City Animal Control.
